Obituary. Brother Alex Barrett PM

It is with deepest sadness and regret that we report the passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Alex Barrett Past Master, peacefully at home on the morning of 15 December 2022, at age 74.

Alex was very much a leading light in Rosslyn St. Clair, an enthusiastic and loyal person who used his imagination and initiative to raise hundreds of pounds for Charity and Lodge funds, over many years. But to all of us Alex was much more than just a successful fundraiser, he was a friend who could light the way ahead in the darkest of times, not least because his sense of humour and seemingly endless supply of quite dreadful one-line jokes was unavoidably infectious to everyone who met him.

Alex was Initiated on 22nd October 1986, Passed on 12 November, Raised on 10 December the same year and gained his Mark on 21 November 1987; He was Installed as Right Worshipful Master in December 2013 and had recently volunteered once more to fulfil that high office in 2022.

In recognition of everything he represented to our Lodge, and Freemasonry in general, Bro. Alex was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal in April 2022. Indeed, should anyone outwith our fraternity ask “What is Freemasonry all about?” the fitting reply could be simply “Alex Barrett”. That might not mean much to the outsider but it would be understood and appreciated by all of us. Our sympathies and best wishes are extended to Tricia and all of Alex’s family.
