Brother John Drynan PM – an Obituary

It is with deepest regret that we report the passing to the Grand Lodge Above of Brother John Drynan PM, on 15 May 2023 at the age of 89. Brother John was a stalwart of Lodge Rosslyn St. Clair in particular but also of Freemasonry in general. He was Initiated on 8 November 1961, Passed on 10 January 1962 and Raised to the degree of Master Mason on 28 February 1962 and on 24 November following, attained the degree of Mark Master Mason. Then after 20 years of continuous service he was installed as Right Worshipful Master of Lodge Rosslyn St. Clair on 19 December 1981.

Everyone who knew John carries very many fond memories – of a man and Brother who could be the life and soul of Harmonies, dancing, singing, and, if persuaded, playing his harmonica to entertain us. Beyond that he was a great ritualist but most importantly he was a kind and generous Brother who took an interest in his fellow man, and particularly new intrants to the Craft.

Regrettably Bro. John’s health had failed over recent years; he became housebound and unable to attend our meetings, but he retained his interest in Rosslyn St. Clair and all things Masonic. In February 2022 he was presented, at home, with his Diamond Jubilee Certificate to mark 60 years of continuous service to Freemasonry. With fond memories from all at 606 and beyond – RIP, Brother John.

Bro. John’s funeral will he held in the Pentland Chapel, Mortonhall Crematorium at 10.30am on Tuesday 30 May 2023, with thereafter an opportunity to express condolences to his family at Bro. John’s Mother Lodge, Rosslyn St. Clair 606, Masonic Hall, 21 Main Street, Roslin.
